Noah rose from his spot and rested his hand on my back, escorting me to the door and out of the room. “That went well. Are you ready for your appointment?”

“I am. Are you?” I asked with a smile.

  Chapter 30

Dr. Cline didn’t leave me waiting long in his office this time. He was smart like that. It had only taken him once to realize his mistake. He walked in and shut the door behind him.

“How are the headaches?” he asked before he even took his seat.

  “Tolerable.”

He sat down and grabbed my chart from his inbox and rested it in front of him. He smiled at me. “The good news is that I think you're stable even after absorbing more blood.”

“It was unavoidable, but I don’t believe those effects will bother me much longer.”

  “Oh? Why’s that?” he asked.

“That’s classified,” I said, trying to hold back my grin. I wasn’t about to tip my hand that one of my donors was about to die. “But I feel good. So, am I cleared to go back to work?”

“I’m afraid not,” he said, almost gleefully.

My heart plunged to the pit of my stomach. “You said my test are stable. My pizza toppings are manageable and getting better, so why can’t I go back to work?”

“Because now the worry isn’t about the toppings in your head.”

“If not, then what’s the problem?”

Cline’s smile broadened. “There’s a pint-size pizza baking in your oven.”

  Chapter 31

  Sneak Peek of Guarding Justice

  Lucy

Ford’s quick departure out of town wasn’t because I’d told him we were pregnant. We just hadn’t had time to discuss much of anything else, and I couldn’t blame him. Not with everything going on. His mother had taken a bad tumble down the stairs just last night, and he’d gotten the call. I was supposed to go with him. I was supposed to be his rock only I’d gotten sick and not the sniffling nose kind of sick. Then there is a foreign entity growing inside my body that isn’t particularly fond for my food choices.

“You on your way?” He asked as I gave one last look around the house.

“Yeah, I’m packed and about to walk out the door. Almost forgot my prenatal meds.” I grabbed the medicine the doctor gave me and popped one in my mouth, chasing it with the last of the water in my bottle.

The doorbell rang, and I turned in that direction.

  “Who is at the door?”

“It’s probably just my cab. Our family and friends know to call first. Hang on while I check.”

I kept the phone to my ear as I unlocked the door and pulled it open. A girl was laying on my stoop. Her face white as a ghost. Blood covered her clothes from the knife gashes in her chest. “Ford, I’ve got to go.”

  “Lucy, wait. Who…”

I hung up on him and dropped to my knees. I reached for the girl’s neck and closed my eyes. No pulse. “Oh no, no, no. This was not happening.”

I dialed the phone and put it on speaker, opening the little girls coat the rest of the way.

“Why aren’t you on the plane?” Noah asked.

I started chest compressions on her blood-stained clothes. “Justice May isn’t breathing.”

  “What, how do you know?”

I started counting out loud only to answer his question before I gave a breath.

“She’s on my porch. I’ve started CPR,” I said.

I couldn’t tell you what was said after that. I tuned it out. The blood on my hands was seeping into my skin, and I fought the urge to tune in.

An SUV idled on the other side of the street. The dark windows hid whoever was behind the wheel.

I looked down at Justice again. I wasn’t supposed to know about her. She was Noah’s closely guarded secret, but like the other guys, if I’m around them long enough, I can tune in to what they’re up to, similar to my blood bonds only with the guys I’m able to cut the connections.

I’d tuned in once at the wrong time just long enough to see Noah and another woman making pancakes for Justice May.

Three, Four, I continued compressions, only stopping to offer breaths.

A siren sounded in the distance. Only I know it wasn’t Noah that called. He’d never let her be taken into such a public place. His secret would be blown, and even I wasn’t privy to why she had to hide in the shadows. Only that she did.

Maybe one of my neighbors watching from across the street standing in their yards had called. A man holding his mail in one hand had a phone in the other. He was the likely tattle-tale.

Sixteen, Seventeen. I continued to count, only giving a glance toward the SUV once more.

“Breath damn it,” I growled to Justice’s prone body before lifting my gaze to her ghostly apparition standing nearby. Sheer panic and fear covered her face. “You aren’t going anywhere. I won’t let you. Do you hear me? Now get your ghostly ass back in your body and let me save you!”
